Emergency Locksmith Burwood East: Lockout Service Explained
Locked out or a door that will not lock in Burwood East? How our 24/7 emergency locksmith and lockout service works, what it costs and what to have ready.
Lockouts and lock failures never happen at a good time. A deadlatch clicks shut with the keys on the kitchen bench. A key snaps in the front door after a late shift. A back door is forced while you are away for the weekend. This guide explains how our emergency locksmith service in Burwood East works, what to expect, and how to keep the cost and stress down.
What counts as an emergency
We treat a call as an emergency when a property cannot be secured or someone cannot get in when they need to. Common examples:
- Locked out of a house, unit or townhouse.
- A child, pet or vulnerable person locked inside.
- An appliance or tap left running inside.
- A key broken off in the cylinder.
- A door that will not lock overnight.
- A lock damaged in a break-in.
- A shop or office that cannot be locked at close.
If you are unsure whether it is urgent, call and describe it. If it can safely wait until office hours, we will say so, because that is cheaper for you.
When to call someone else first
If anyone is in immediate danger, or a child is locked in a hot car or a room with a hazard, call 000 first. If a break-in has just happened, call the police before touching anything. Then call us to secure the property.
How our emergency service works
1. You call
Call 03 4422 2837. Emergency calls are answered 24/7. Tell us the address, the type of door, what has happened, and whether anyone or anything urgent is inside.
2. We give you a price and an honest estimate
Before dispatching anyone we tell you the call-out price or likely range, and give you a realistic arrival estimate. We will not promise an arrival time we have not confirmed with you on the call.
3. We confirm you can enter
On arrival we ask for reasonable proof that you are entitled to enter: a licence with the address, a lease, a bill or confirmation from your property manager. If your ID is inside, we open the door and check it before leaving.
4. We open or secure the door
We use the least damaging method for your lock. Most residential lockouts are opened without damage. If the lock must be drilled, we explain why and agree the cost of replacing it first.
5. We check and advise
Once you are in, we check the lock works properly and explain anything worth doing, such as rekeying if your keys were lost.
Lockouts: why they happen so often
Deadlatches lock automatically when the door closes. They are convenient and secure, but they are the main reason people get locked out. Townhouses and units around Burwood One, Burwood Highway and Middleborough Road commonly use them.
A few simple habits help:
- Keep a spare key with a neighbour or family member nearby.
- Get into the habit of checking for keys before closing the door.
- Ask whether your deadlatch can be set not to deadlock automatically.
See our lockout service page for more.
Broken and jammed keys
Keys usually snap because a lock is already stiff, or because the key is worn thin. A broken key can usually be extracted without replacing the lock. We then check the cylinder, because the same problem will happen again if the lock is worn. A lock repair or rekey prevents a repeat.
After a break-in
After the police have attended, our priority is to make the door lockable that day. That may mean replacing a damaged cylinder, refitting a strike plate torn out of the frame, or fitting a temporary lock. Keep the damaged parts and photograph everything for your insurer.
Once the property is secure, it is worth thinking about upgrades. Our guide on what to do after a break-in covers the next steps.
What emergency work costs
After-hours work costs more than a booked weekday visit because someone is leaving home at short notice. You will always be told the price before we come. Our locksmith costs guide explains how pricing works.
What we will not do
- We will not open a property without reasonable proof of entitlement.
- We will not promise an arrival time we have not confirmed.
- We will not drill a lock without explaining why and agreeing the cost.
- We will not replace a lock in an emergency when a repair will do.
Commercial emergencies
For businesses, an emergency often means a door that will not lock at close, a roller door lock that has failed, or a staff member who has left with keys. We secure the premises first and then arrange permanent repairs or rekeying. See commercial locksmith.
Suburbs we cover in an emergency
We are based at 50 Middleborough Rd, Burwood East, and cover:
