Lock Repair in Burwood East

Most locks give warning signs long before they fail. A key that needs jiggling, a door that has to be pulled hard before the deadlock will throw, or a handle that has started to droop. Lock repair fixes the cause rather than the symptom, and in many cases saves you the cost of a new lock.

01

What we handle

  • Stiff or hard-to-turn keys
  • Latches that do not catch the strike
  • Deadlocks that need force to throw
  • Loose or drooping handles and levers
  • Worn cylinders and pins
  • Misaligned strike plates
  • Snibs and turn knobs that slip
  • Sliding door locks that will not engage

01

Why locks start to stick

In Melbourne the most common cause is not the lock at all. Timber doors swell in wet winters and shrink in hot summers, so the bolt no longer lines up with the strike. A worn or dirty cylinder is the next most common cause, followed by loose fixing screws and tired springs. Diagnosing which one it is decides whether the fix is a small adjustment or a part replacement.

02

Adjusting the door and strike

When a door has dropped or swollen, moving the strike plate or tightening hinge screws often brings everything back into line. Forcing a misaligned lock wears the bolt and can snap a key, so it is worth fixing early. We check the door closes, latches and deadlocks smoothly without pushing or lifting.

03

Servicing cylinders and mechanisms

Cylinders collect dust and grit, and household oils make it worse by turning into sludge. A proper service cleans the cylinder and lubricates it with a lock-appropriate product. Worn pins or springs can be replaced. If the internal mechanism of a mortice lock is broken, parts are fitted where they are still available.

04

When repair is not the right answer

Some locks are not worth repairing. Very old or cheap locks may have no parts available, and a lock that has been forced may no longer be secure even if it turns. In those cases we explain why replacement makes more sense and give you options at different price points.

03

What happens, in order

  1. 1.Tell us what the lock is doing and when it happens.
  2. 2.We inspect the door, frame, strike and lock together.
  3. 3.We explain the cause and the repair cost before starting.
  4. 4.We adjust, service or replace the worn parts.
  5. 5.We test the door from both sides with every key.

What we will not do

  • We will not recommend replacement when a repair will safely do the job.
  • We will not use household oil on cylinders, as it attracts grime.
  • We will not leave a lock that still needs force to operate.
