Vermont South Locksmith Guide: Large Homes, Many Locks

A local guide to locks in Vermont South VIC 3133: double-storey family homes, reserves, townhouses near the tram terminus, and keying it all to one key.

Vermont South lies east of Burwood East along Burwood Highway, where the 75 tram finishes its run at the Vermont South Shopping Centre. It is a quiet, family-focused suburb built mostly through the 1970s and 1980s, with curving streets, courts and large homes set among parks and bushland reserves. This guide covers the homes and businesses we work on in Vermont South, and the lock jobs we are asked to do most often.

What makes Vermont South homes different

The typical Vermont South home is a spacious double-storey brick house. Compared with a smaller single-storey home, it usually has:

  • A front entry door with a deadlatch and often a separate deadbolt.
  • A back door or laundry door.
  • One or more sliding doors onto a patio or deck.
  • An internal door from the garage into the house.
  • A side gate.
  • Screen doors on several of the above.
  • A large number of windows, upstairs and down.

That adds up to a lot of locks. Over thirty or forty years, many of them have been replaced one at a time, often with whatever brand was available. The result is a key ring with five or six different keys.

One key for the whole house

The most popular job we do in Vermont South is bringing every lock onto a single key. Here is how it works.

  1. We check each lock's brand and key profile.
  2. Locks that share a compatible profile are rekeyed to the same new key.
  3. Any incompatible lock has its cylinder replaced with a matching one, or the lock is replaced if it is worn.
  4. We cut enough keys for the household.

Everyone gets one key that opens every external door, and the old keys stop working. See lock rekeying and our guide Lock Rekeying Costs in Melbourne for how it is priced.

Original hardware reaching the end of its life

Many Vermont South homes still have locks fitted when the house was built. After decades of daily use, common problems include:

  • Deadbolts that need the door pulled tight before they throw.
  • Latches that no longer catch reliably.
  • Keys that are worn and only work at a certain angle.
  • Handles that have loosened or dropped.

Some of these are lock repair jobs. Where parts are no longer available, lock replacement is the sensible choice. We will tell you which applies before doing anything.

Homes backing onto reserves

A number of Vermont South streets back onto parkland and bushland reserves. These are lovely places to live, but the back of the house faces open space rather than neighbours. Nobody is likely to notice someone at the back door or a rear window.

For these homes we usually recommend:

  • A solid deadbolt with a reinforced strike plate on every rear door.
  • Keyed locks on ground-floor windows facing the reserve.
  • A keyed lock on the back gate if the garden opens onto the reserve.
  • Anti-lift protection and a keyed bolt on rear sliding doors.

Our security locksmith service can walk through each entry point and prioritise the upgrades.

Upstairs windows and child safety

Double-storey homes with young children or visiting grandchildren benefit from restrictors on upstairs windows. A restrictor limits how far a window opens, usually to around 12.5cm, so fresh air comes in but a child cannot fall out. They can be released by an adult for cleaning or in an emergency. See window locks and our window locks guide.

The internal garage door

Many Vermont South homes have a door from the double garage straight into the house. If a garage remote is stolen from a car parked in the driveway, that internal door becomes the main barrier. A deadbolt on it, keyed alike with the rest of the house, is a sensible upgrade.

Townhouses near the shopping centre

Around the Vermont South Shopping Centre and the tram terminus there are newer townhouses and units. These usually have modern deadlatches and aluminium sliders. The most common calls from these homes are lockouts, because the deadlatch locks as the door closes. Our lockout service is available 24/7, and a spare key with a neighbour is the best prevention.

Local businesses

Medical suites, shops and service businesses around the shopping centre and along Burwood Highway call us for:

  • Rekeying after staff changes.
  • Repairing worn shopfront locks.
  • Restricted keys for medicine cupboards and file storage.

See commercial locksmith.

A checklist for a large Vermont South home

  • List every external door, including garage access and gates.
  • Count how many different keys you use.
  • Note any lock that sticks or needs force.
  • Check rear doors facing reserves have deadbolts.
  • Check sliders cannot be lifted out.
  • Check ground-floor windows lock.
  • Consider restrictors on upstairs windows.
  • Book one visit to rekey alike and fix the rest.

Selling or buying in Vermont South

When a long-held home sells, the new owners should rekey every external lock. If you are buying, ask the agent how many keys will be handed over, then book a rekey for settlement day. Our guide Rekey or Replace Locks? explains which locks are worth keeping.

Security habits that help

  • Lock the internal garage door at night.
  • Do not leave garage remotes in cars parked outside.
  • Keep the back gate locked if it opens onto a reserve.
  • Do not hide a spare key outside.
  • Keep window keys in a known place near each window.
